sosreport (ethtool -e) causes NIC interruption

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Beginning in sos-3.7, the command ethtool -e was included by default
  • The command ethtool -e reads the EEPROM data on a NIC
  • Reading the EEPROM data can cause a multi-second interruption on the NIC which may result in application outages. Some BMC (iLO, iDRAC) NICs become disabled and might require to remove the power cords from the server to reset the BMC to normal state.
