RHEL Desktop refresh broken after unlock - unlock screen and menu entries persist

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.8, 7.9, 8.3
  • X11 and Wayland
  • gnome-classic

Issue

  • Once password is entered into lock screen, the menu bar appears, but the lock screen image persists.
  • When clicking menu items after this, the sub menus do not disappear if the mouse is moved out of them and they persist.
  • On RHEL 8.3 it was observed that the mouse pointer will leave a persisting trail.

Resolution

  • This issue was identified as a bug and Bugzilla ticket 1905000 was filed for further action by our Engineering team.
  • This Bugzilla ticket resulted in Errata RHBA-2021:1387, which should fix the issue for RHEL 7.9.
    • Please apply this errata to your system to determine whether this fixes your issue. Instructions for applying the errata are contained in the errata link above.
    • Note that GUI packages can be dependent on other packages not covered in the errata being the same minor version. If you experience GUI issues after applying the errata, a full yum update is recommended.
  • A fix for this issue for RHEL 8 is still in progress. If you're experiencing this issue on RHEL 8, or if the errata does not fix your issue, please file a support case.
    • A workaround currently only exists for X11, not for Wayland.
    • Workaround for X11 reload gnome-shell:
    • Press ALT+F2 to open quick command.
    • Enter the letter r and press Enter.

Root Cause

  • Unknown at the time of writing.
