Producer compression vs Broker compression

Issue

• Does the compression defined in the topic cause the producer client to compress the messages from the beginning or are the messages sent without compression and later compressed at the broker?
  compression.type in producer.properties or during the topic creation using "--config compression.type=X"
  We can define the compression.type in the producer.properties and also during the topic creation, how works the precedence between them?
