XFS with an external log device does not always mount

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Filesystem logdev device causes a no boot scenario with sd device names in fstab for logdev
  • Sometimes the filesystem is mountable, but sometimes it is not.
  • When the expected sd device name changes, the system fails to boot to completion.
  • Below is an example /etc/fstab resembling such a setup:
/dev/mapper/vg_satellite-lv_info1 /var/lib/info1 xfs defaults,logdev=/dev/sdg1,noatime 1 2
/dev/mapper/vg_satellite-lv_info2 /var/lib/info2 xfs defaults,logdev=/dev/sdn1,noatime 1 2
/dev/mapper/vg_satellite-lv_data1 /var/lib/data1 xfs defaults,logdev=/dev/sdk2,noatime 1 2
/dev/mapper/vg_satellite-lv_data2 /var/lib/data2 xfs defaults,logdev=/dev/sdz2,noatime 1 2
