Why are IO errors observed when setting extended attributes in disperse or distributed disperse volumes?

Issue

  • Inspecting the Gluster client logs of a native Gluster mount ( available at /var/run/gluster/glusterfs/mount-point.log ) coming from a disperse or a distributed-disperse volume, the following messages are observed:

    [2020-07-13 16:42:18.060835] W [MSGID: 122040] [ec-common.c:1232:ec_prepare_update_cbk] 0-Disperse-volume-disperse-10: Failed to get size and version :  FOP : 'XATTROP' failed on '/directory1/directory2/' with gfid 563d77bd-6043-40a7-93bd-149aa8d194a3 [Input/output error]
    
  • Why are these messages seen? How to prevent them?
