mysqldump fails with error "Unknown command '\'."

After upgrading machines to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.6, mysqldump fails with the following error:
"ERROR at line 12335: Unknown command '\''." -
The command works correctly with mysql 5.0.77-4.el5_5.4 or earlier
