httpd is using the wrong SSL certificate

Issue

We have multiple virtual hosts (for example vhost a.com and vhost b.com) on the same ip and port each with their own specified ssl cert file. vhost b.com appears to be using the ssl certs from vhost a.com though. How can we correct this?
