RHEL 6.0 kickstart does not create spare disk on RAID

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • A RAID created with kickstart does not include any spare disks even though --spares=1 was specified.  For example:
    part raid.11 --size=1024 --grow --ondisk=sda --asprimary
    part raid.12 --size=1024 --grow --ondisk=sdb --asprimary
    part raid.13 --size=1024 --grow --ondisk=sdc --asprimary
    part raid.14 --size=1024 --grow --ondisk=sdd --asprimary
    raid /var --fstype ext3 --level=RAID5 --spares=1 --device=md0 raid.11 raid.12 raid.13 raid.14

  • After installation is finished, md0 has all disks active with no spares:
    [root@localhost ~]$ cat /proc/mdstat
    Personalities : [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4]
    md0 : active raid5 sda1[0] sdb1[1] sdc1[2] sdd1[3]

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0
  • kickstart file that creates a RAID with a spare disk
