After reboot the grub menu does not show the countdown, the server gets stuck in the kernel selection menu

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7

The grub menu doesn't show the countdown to boot automatically so the server doesn't start without manual intervention, waiting in the kernel selection menu. Cold boot does not get stuck.

This is known bug currently tracked by BZ 1724616

Root Cause

During the boot sequence, one or more keystrokes fill the buffer, which cancels the countdown.
Possible sources of false keystrokes are:

  • KVM console
  • BIOS
  • noise from serial line
