Why are seemingly unrelated start and stop scripts updated when 'chkconfig --add' is used?

Issue

When adding new start and stop control scripts for a new custom service using chkconfig --add, sometimes seemingly random files in /etc/rcX.d are seen within ls output to have been updated. Why is this?
