The Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) network operator no longer allows the configuration of unsupported hardware by default

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Starting from OpenShift 4.5.1, the Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) network operator defaults to a policy that restricts the configuration of network interface cards (NICs) to the list of supported devices only.

  • When attempting to configure a NIC that is not on the list, an error such as the following may be encountered:

Error from server (vendor/device 8086/1583 is not supported): error when creating "policy.yaml": admission webhook "operator-webhook.sriovnetwork.openshift.io" denied the request: vendor/device 8086/1583 is not supported

  • This may occur even if the same configuration was previously viable in earlier versions of Openshift.

Environment

  • Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (RHOCP)
    • 4.5+
