Updating to new minor version gives errors for my current running kernel instead of the one being installed

Issue

When doing a kernel upgrade from kernel-2.6.18-308.13.1.el5 to kernel-2.6.18-348.el5, why am I getting the following errors relating to my current kernel?

mktemp: cannot make temp dir /tmp/initrd.v26218: No space left on device
Error creating temporaries.  Try again
mkinitrd failed
error: %post(kernel-2.6.18-308.13.1.el5.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit status 1
mktemp: cannot make temp dir /tmp/weak-modules.b32330: No space left on device

Environment

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5
