SPM crashes because of too many /usr/share/vdsm/storage/remoteFileHandler.pyc processes

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

For each virtual machine created, a new process is started on the SPM host:

/usr/bin/python /usr/share/vdsm/storage/remoteFileHandler.pyc

This process remains active. Eventually there is more than 1000 of these processes. The vdsmd becomes unresponsive and as this host is the SPM, the cluster and datacenter go down.
This behavior severely limits the ability to scale-up environments where VMs mainly are often created and destroyed.
