kipmi kernel thread generates occasianlly high CPU load under RHEL7

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

The kipmi0 kernel thread sometimes goes to 95%..100% CPU usage, sometimes the load remains the same for long periods of time, sometimes the load is unstable and drops.
Usually, the load corresponds to frequent ipmitool commands or ipmi requests issued by kernel drivers (for instance ipmi_watchdog) or load is high during BMC firmware upgrades.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
  • Out-of-band management hardware that supports the IPMI
