cups-browsed memory consumption in RHEL 7.7 and RHEL 8 increases monotonically

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • CUPS is able to keep pace with printing, until the server runs out of memory due to cups-browsed consuming it all.
  • cups-browsed memory usage increases monotonically during use
  • Memory consumption of the cups-browsed process on the client is increasing gradually and consuming most of the memory resources in the host.
  • The kernel is reporting an out-of-memory (OOM) condition. The following entries are found in the system log:

Feb 17 13:57:44 ny17u4118 kernel: Out of memory: Kill process 2128 (cups-browsed) score 583 or sacrifice child
    Feb 17 13:57:44 ny17u4118 kernel: Killed process 2128 (cups-browsed), UID 0, total-vm:64695240kB, anon-rss:51581276kB, file-rss:0kB, shmem-rss:0kB

After this, print queues become disabled.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.7 and 8
  • RHEL 7: cups-filters-1.0.35-26.el7, cups-filters-1.0.35-26.el7_1
