Why are VMs in my RHEV environment pausing during Netapp I/O controller giveback?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • While simulating a NetApp controller crash the takeover correctly works, with the secondary controller taking the I/O traffic and the virtual machines continue to run, but during the giveback to restore the I/O to the first controller the VMs become paused and do not automatically start.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.2
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • device-mapper-multipath
  • NetApp SAN storage in Active-Active (ALUA) mode
