dmidecode does not show server's serial number

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • Server: Proliant DL380 G5

  • Problem: dmidecode does not show server's "Serial Number" nor "Product ID".

  • Normally I use the dmidecode utility to determine the serial number of our Proliant DL380 G5 servers (running RHEL 6.4). However, in this case the following is shown:

# dmidecode | grep "Serial Number" | head -1
        Serial Number:

# dmidecode | grep -i product
        Product Name: ProLiant DL380 G5
        String 1: Product ID: ..
  • I got the serial number by looking on the paper toe tag attached to the server but I shouldn't have to do this. Also, if this server were in a remote location I would have to enlist the help of a local person who is not always available.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, 6
  • HP ProLiant Server seris
