Virtual Server Stuck At `Probing EDD (edd=off)` After Migrating From ESXi 6.0 To 6.7.
Issue
- After migrating a RHEL 7.5 virtual server from VMware ESXi 6.0 to ESXi 6.7, this error was encountered when powering on the virtual machine:
"Module 'CPUID' power on failed. Failed to start the VM. This VM requires AVX2 but AVX is not present."
- This error was overcome by editing the virtual machine's settings' CPU Section --> CPUID Mask --> Advanced and clicking "Reset All to Default".
- After the above, the RHEL virtual server powers on and starts to boot, only to hang at:
Loading vmlinuz........
Loading initrd.img........ ....... ready.
Probing EDD (edd=off to disable).... ok
- The solution recommended in Why does installation halt at the "Probing EDD" message on the Fujitsu PRIMERGY TX120 S2? was tried but did not help.
- Adding
eagerfpu=off
to the kernel command line also failed.
- Adding
- Trying to boot the virtual machine into rescue mode or off of a RHEL DVD image fails.
- Booting the virtual machine off of a Windows Server 2016 image succeeds.
- New virtual machines created on the VMware ESXi 6.7 system successfully boot into RHEL.
- Attempts at capturing additional information via methods like the one shown in How to get very early shown console messages during boot time ? reveal no additional information.
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.5
- VMware ESXi 6.0
- VMware ESXi 6.7
