Virtual Server Stuck At `Probing EDD (edd=off)` After Migrating From ESXi 6.0 To 6.7.

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • After migrating a RHEL 7.5 virtual server from VMware ESXi 6.0 to ESXi 6.7, this error was encountered when powering on the virtual machine:
    • "Module 'CPUID' power on failed. Failed to start the VM. This VM requires AVX2 but AVX is not present."
    • This error was overcome by editing the virtual machine's settings' CPU Section --> CPUID Mask --> Advanced and clicking "Reset All to Default".
  • After the above, the RHEL virtual server powers on and starts to boot, only to hang at:
Loading vmlinuz........
Loading initrd.img........ ....... ready.
Probing EDD (edd=off to disable).... ok

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.5
  • VMware ESXi 6.0
  • VMware ESXi 6.7
