gfs2_grow is taking a long time and appears to be hung

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • How to extend a gfs2 filesystem when I extended the LUN?
  • The gfs2_grow command is not returning and I do not see any errors on the /var/log/messages from the system I issued the command.
  • The gfs2_grow command never completed and appears to hang for hours/days.
  • The error message below appears on the other clustered systems when running the gfs2_growcommand:

kernel: device-mapper: table: device X:X too small for target

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 6, 7, 8 (with the High Availability Add On and Resilient Storage Add Ons)
  • A Global Filesystem 2(gfs2)
