VMware vSphere thin StorageClass based PersistentVolumeClaims remain in pending state indefinitely in OCP 4

Issue

  • Persistent volume claims provisioned from the thin StorageClass using the OpenShift Vsphere cloud provider remaining in pending indefinitely.
  • The claim remain in pending state without any indication from oc describe pvc as to why this is occurring. This can cause operators that require a working dynamic provisioner to fail during installation (OCS 4 as an example).
  • A VMDK is created on the specified datastore, but the PVC never binds and the VMDK stays 0KB.
  • The following logs are repeated in the active master controller-manager pod:
