"operating parameters on this target have changed" messages

Issue

  • the following are being logged in /var/log/messages:

    kernel: sd 1:0:0:0: [sdc] Warning! Received an indication that the operating parameters on this target have changed. 
                  The Linux SCSI layer does not automatically adjust these parameters.

  • What is causing a rescan because no one is manually triggering it.

  • According to the SAN administrators no changes were made to the storage presented to the systems.

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7
  • SAN storage
