Creating/expanding files hit unexpected ENOSPC on ext4 filesystem

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • Creating/expanding files sometimes fails with unexpected ENOSPC on ext4 filesystem even though the disk space looks sufficient.

  • This phenomenon occurs if and only if the free space of the filesystem is almost the same as the size which is expected to be occupied by creating/expanding files.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and 6

  • ext4 filesystems
