system hangs with a lot of processes in D-state

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • Systems with real-time kernel show the following behaviour:
    • it is possible to login, /proc/loadavg does increase continuously
    • w does hang immediately
    • ps does show a bunch of processes and hangs most of them in D-state
    • The only way to recover is a hard reset.
  • System shows kernel-threads (e.g. flush and jbd2) in D-state.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • MRG-RT kernel kernel-rt-3.6.11.2-rt33.39.el6rt.x86_64 up to kernel-rt-3.8.13-rt27.33.el6rt.x86_64
