After updating to RHEL 5.6, vmware guest does not boot

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • After updating to RHEL 5.6, the system does not boot
  • Kernel version that does not boot is 2.6.18-238.1.1.e15
  • System will boot normally with all other kernel versions prior to 5.6
  • At boot, it fails with the following error:
    Setting up Logical Volume Management: File-based locking initialisation failed.
    Checking filesystems
    fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/volgroup02/lv_db
    fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/volgroup02/lv_upg
    fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/volgroup02/lv_u1

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5
  • RHEL as VMware Guest
