The linker ld cannot find libstdc++ library

When compling in matlab, the linking portion fails with an error message '/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -libstdc++'. There is no libstdc++.so for the ld to use. After adding a symbolic link, Matlab compile completes successfully on 32 and 64 bit boxes.

Why is there no libstd++.so file present in /usr/lib in Red Hat Enterprise Linux ?
