Why does running /sbin/udevtrigger cause my Virtual IP to disappear?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

In an environment such as for example Oracle RAC, a virtual IP address may be used on a bonded interface. This Virtual IP address is not managed by the normal networking scripts. In such a scenario, adding or modifying udev rules and subsequently running /sbin/udevtrigger to apply the additions or changes may cause the Virtual IP to be removed from the bonded interface it was configured on, causing a services failure.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5

  • bonded network interfaces

  • Virtual IP address on the bonded interface, not managed by the networking scripts but by some other software
