CPU "model 45" systems hangs/panics during boot following an update to the microcode_ctl package

Issue

  • After upgrade to microcode_ctl-1.17-33.14.el6_10.x86_64, the system is powered off during boot.
  • After update, the system hangs during boot with the following messages on the console:

    microcode: CPU0 sig=0x206d7, pf=0x40, revision=0x714
    platform microcode: firmware: requesting intel-ucode/06-2d-07
    

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • microcode_ctl
  • Intel model 45 CPUs. The following models have been reported to experience the issue (not inclusive list)

    Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-4640 0 @ 2.40GHz
