Image in a4j:mediaOutput is not changed on AJAX rendering in Firefox and IE

Issue

When an image in a4j:mediaOutput is re-rendered via AJAX, the image stays the same, even though it should change.
E.g. consider an a4j:mediaOutput that displays randomly generated picture (e.g. captcha), when such a component is re-rendered via AJAX, the image stays the same until a page-refresh.
