sshd fails with "fatal: daemon() failed: No such device"

Issue

  • Cannot start sshd, the below are seen in /var/log/secure:
Sep  4 09:41:19 server sshd[27828]: fatal: daemon() failed: No such device
Sep  4 09:41:38 server sshd[27871]: fatal: daemon() failed: No such device
Sep  4 09:42:03 server sshd[27918]: fatal: daemon() failed: No such device
