Link flapping in Slave interface of Active-backup bonding

Issue

  • Cutomer has configured bond0, active/backup, with slave interfaces as eth0 and eth3, eth3 is inactive slave interface. 
  • Customer notices following errors in /var/log/messages file when eth0 is set as the active interface in bond0.

Aug 17 12:07:05 xxxxxxxxxxxxx kernel: bonding: bond0: backup interface eth3 is now down 
Aug 17 12:07:14 xxxxxxxxxxxxx kernel: bonding: bond0: backup interface eth3 is now up 
  • Error messages are printed only when eth3 is made Slave interface.
  • Error messages dissapper when eth3 is made Active Slave using ifenslave or if miimon is used instead arp_mon in bonding.

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5 update 3

  • Bonding Mode: fault-tolerance (active-backup)
