DM-Multipath doesn't recover lost path after reconnecting

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When the storage side controllers are stopped, DM-Multipath looses access to the LUNs, "physically", and then the system deletes the sub paths (/dev/sdX devices) mapped to the multipath devices.

  • Once the storage controller is up and running, still the removed sub paths could not discovered on the system even after rescanning the SCSI bus using steps in article - How do I rescan the SCSI bus to add or remove a SCSI device without rebooting the computer?

  • After rescanning the scsi bus, /proc/scsi/scsi showing all the devices but fdisk -l does not list all the devices.

  • After reboot system detect all the sub paths properly.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 6.3
