Printing may not work with Samba 4.9.1 in RHEL 7.7 and RHEL 8.1

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • After upgrading to Samba 4.9.1 in RHEL 7.7, an smbspool command like the following works:

    /usr/bin/smbspool smb://user:password@domain/winserver/print_share 1 user test 1 "" /etc/fstab

but creating a CUPS print queue with the same Device URI results in print failures:

    lpadmin -p cups-queue -v smb://user:password@domain/winserver/print_share -E

  • The behavior described above may also appear in RHEL 8.0 and 8.1.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.7, 8.0, & 8.1
  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS)
  • Samba 4.9.1-6.el7 & 4.10.4-101.el8
