What is the official C/C++ Integrated Development Environment for Red Hat Enterprise Linux?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5/6

Issue

  • What is the official C/C++ IDE for Red Hat Enterprise Linux?

Resolution

  • The IDE used in RHEL 5 is Kdevelop for C++/C. Eclipse is also available, but only for Java development. C/C++ support for Eclipse is not shipped in RHEL 5. However, the "eclipse-cdt" package which provides the C/C++ support is available in RHEL 5 EPEL repository. See this kbase for more information on EPEL : https://access.redhat.com/kb/docs/DOC-3359

  • RHEL 6 has moved to fully supporting Eclipse as the "official" development environment. The CDT plug-ins and many more are included. There is a developer guide available on using Eclipse in RHEL 6 : http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Developer_Guide/index.html

  • If possible, It's recommended to upgrade to RHEL 6 and use the Eclipse IDE.
