Cannot boot system after shim-x64 update: "Failed to set MokListRT: Invalid Parameter" message seen prior to reaching Grub2

Issue

  • When booting some UEFI hardware after updating shim-x64 to shim-x64-15-1.el7 or later, the system doesn't boot and the following message is seen on the console

    Failed to set MokListRT: Invalid Parameter
    Something has gone seriously wrong: import_mok_state() failed:
    Invalid Parameter
    

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
  • UEFI on some special hardware (e.g. Hitachi LPAR)
  • shim-x64 and mokutil
