Monitoring long running threads in JBoss Web and Tomcat

Issue

• Is there a recommended way to detect threads which have been idle too long, apart from the JVM reporting deadlocks?
• Is is desired to have the ability to monitor http and ajp connector threads and detect when a thread has been running longer than x seconds and send a notification.
