RHEL8 does not reach installer on older AMD Proliant hardware

Issue

  • The installation of RHEL 8 on older AMD hardware fail without the opportunity to capture error messages or logs.
  • Affected is virt-install as well as bare metal install but with different symptoms:
    • The virtual machine shuts down during virt-install
    • Bare metal install (USB DBD iso) reboot the system.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8
  • AMD Opteron 8400 Proliant DL585 G5
  • AMD Turion II Proliant Microserver G7
