"system-config-users" fails to run due to a mismatch between "passwd/group" and "shadow/gshadow"

Issue

  • When launching "system-config-users" it gives following error

    The user database cannot be read.This problem is most likely
caused by a mismatch between /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow
or /etc/group and /etc/gshadow. The program will exit now.

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 5
