Broadcom NIC fails with "bnx2x_nic_load:1836 Function start failed!" logged

Issue

  • Bringing the network interface up fails, and results in the following error logged in /var/log/messages:

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, earlier than 6.4
  • Network interface using bnx2x driver such as Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM57711E 10-Gigabit PCIe
