Poor CUPS Performance in RHEL caused by DNS problems

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • If we point to lpd://workstation1/printer1 it adds about 5 seconds to the total print time. If we point to the IP address or put an entry for the workstation in /etc/hosts the total print time decreases.
  • Slow printing using local network attached printer

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS)
