Howto cause bonding driver in active-backup mode to select a mac address

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • For a system using the bonding driver in active-backup mode, is it possible to cause the bonded network device to have a known mac address?

  • We're running a product which does license calculations based in part on the mac address of the primary interface.  Currently, when starting the bonding driver and enslaving the physical interfaces, bond0 gets the mac address of the first ethX slave to become active.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • bnx2x driver supplied by Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
