Network interface using virtio_net module stops functioning on RHEL4 and RHEL5 KVM guest(s)

Issue

  • Unable to ping a RHEL 4 or 5 KVM guest.
  • Restarting networking through console did not restore network services.
  • The other guests on the host are fine.
  • A reboot of the affected guest may resolve the problem.

Environment

  • KVM Host: Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.5 x86_64
  • KVM Host: Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization - Hypervisor(RHEV-H) 3.0
  • KVM Guest: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.8 i386 and x86_64
  • KVM Guest: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x x86_64
