vsftpd: cannot locate user specified in 'ftp_username':ftp

Issue

  • After installing the vsftpd package the ftp user is not installed in /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow:
vsftpd: cannot locate user specified in 'ftp_username':ftp
  • Installing vsftpd rpm (rpm -uvh or yum install (no gpgcheck)) with no errors. Attempting to connect, '500, oops' error and /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow shows no ftp user has been created.
