firefox and gedit fail to open and give a 'symbol lookup error'

Issue

  • firefox or gedit fail the start when executed as a specific user:
  • Firefox gives the following error:
    /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.7/firefox-bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgnomevfs-2.so.0: undefined symbol: xmlTextReaderConstName
  • Gedit gives the following error:
    Warning: program compiled against libxml 206 using older 205
gedit: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgnomevfs-2.so.0: undefined symbol: xmlTextReaderConstName
