Why do I receive Error "unknown Smart Array controller" in dmesg output when running the MRG Realtime kernel?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Generally we do not upgrade to vendor provided drivers, but we are having an internal discussion now about whether we should for the HP Smart Array Controller on our servers.
  • Below is the root cause of our internal discussion.

    [root@HOSTNAME]# dmesg|grep cciss
cciss: This is an unknown Smart Array controller.
cciss: Please update to the latest driver available from www.hp.com.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise MRG v1.2 or earlier
  • HP ProLiant BL460c G6

  • RAID bus controller: Hewlett-Packard Company Smart Array G6 controllers (rev 01), with PCI ID 103c:323a
