What does 'e' mean in the output of 'lsattr'?

- On a EXT4 filesystem, all the files have the 'e' flag set on them by default. What does it signify?
$ lsattr my_file
-------------e-
- What are the changes in ext4 which makes it perform faster than ext2/ext3?
