Why do I see ypserv[]: WARNING(ypproc_all_2_svc): cannot fork: Cannot allocate memory message ?

Issue

NIS clients are experiencing NIS troubles. In their NIS slave server's /var/log/messages file the following message is repeated many times :

ypserv[]: WARNING(ypproc_all_2_svc): cannot fork: Cannot allocate memory

After issuing the command "service restart ypserv", the YP service is working fine again.

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3
