autofs not mounting file systems with error 'couldn't open /etc/nsswitch.conf' in RHEL

Issue

  • autofs is not mounting configured directories, and we see the error:
Aug  6 20:22:58 example automount[6518]: nsswitch_parse:173: couldn't open /etc/nsswitch.conf 
Aug  6 20:22:58 example automount[6518]: lookup_nss_read_master: can't to read name service switch config.
  • NIS or LDAP automount directory won't mount

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 or 6
  • autofs
  • Mappings provided by NSS services (LDAP, NIS, etc)
  • SELinux in enforcing mode
  • Context on /etc/nsswitch.conf has been modified from the default
