Why SNMPv3 user cannot be created?

Issue

  • A line similar to the following appears in the logs while starting snmpd after using # net-snmp-create-v3-user -ro -A <authpass> -X <privpass> -a MD5 -x DES <user> to create an SNMPv3 user:

    snmpd[XXXX]: /var/lib/net-snmp/snmpd.conf: line XX: Error: could not generate the authentication key from the supplied pass phrase.
snmpd[XXXX]: net-snmp: 1 error(s) in config file(s)

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
  • net-snmp, snmpd
  • FIPS mode enabled
