Why do I get a "Device or resource busy while trying to open $device" error when running resize2fs on a volume replicated with VMware DoubleTake (dtfs module)?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • I cannot resize the filesystem:
# resize2fs /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol05
resize2fs 1.39 (29-May-2006)
resize2fs: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol05
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.
  • We use VMware DoubleTake but it was stopped with "service DT stop".

Environment

  • RHEL 5 (might apply to other versions as well)
  • VMware DoubleTake "dtfs" kernel module is loaded
