How do I restrict access to removable storage media devices in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 ?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • I need to restrict access to all removable media devices such as CD/DVD-Rom and USB devices.
  • These must only be mountable by root or a select list of specific users.
  • The restriction should apply to the gdm login, console login, and even remote attempts via ssh.

  • The autorun/automount features must be disabled so that a CD or USB-device when inserted will not automatically mount.

  • How to manually mount a USB device as root or as a selected user when auto mount is disabled

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
